Methuen, Massachusetts was established as a town in 1725 when Lt. Stephen Barker tried to divide the Town of Haverhill. Governor Dummer signed an act to create the Town of Methuen. The city was named for Sir Paul Methuen, a member of the King's Privy Council and a good friend to the governor. The first Town Meeting was held on March 9, 1726. Methuen is on the western side of Essex County, thirty mi. northwest of Boston, and twenty-five mi. southeast of Manchester, New Hampshire. There are approximately 44,000 people living in Methuen and the average income for families in the city is $50,000.

The Searles Tenney Nevins Historic District was founded in 1992 to conserve the wonderful character and architecture as well as one of Massachusetts' most distinguishable communities. The district is named after Methuen's three city fathers: David C. Nevins, Edward F. Searles, and Charles H. Tenney. Many of the historic sites in the area that are interesting to visitors are on the National Registry of Historical Places. The Nevins Memorial Library was an elaborate stained glass and brick building. It was established in 1868 by David Nevins, but it was not completed until 1883. There is a treasure of history in Methuen. It is a terrific destination, especially visitors that are interested in historical sites.
